On Writing

Don't let secondary characters derail your plot.

If a secondary character does lead you off on a merry goose chase, go along and write it all down, then edit it out of the book you're writing at the moment, but--and this is very important!--save all that stuff you edit out. The truth is that you may have just stumbled onto a great story idea for another book. You, the writer, need to know every character's personality and back story, but the reader doesn't. Reveal only the information that the plot requires and your story will be much better for it.
